Interested in Upgrading to Referee Grade 7?
(rev. 2008 07.01 copyright 2008 John M. Bouda)

If you are interested in upgrading to grade 7 Referee, you need to do the following:

Notification in Writing. First, inform the State Referee Administrator (“SRA”) and your Area Referee Administrator (“ARA”) that you want to upgrade, in writing (letter or email).  Please explain why you want to upgrade.  Send it along with a cheque for $50.00 payable to “NCSRA” and your match log to the SRA at P.O. Box 5838. Asheville, NC 28813.

Grade 7 Physical Fitness Test. Second, you must arrange with your ARA to take the USSF physical fitness test for Grade 7 Referee that you must pass before being assessed for upgrade.

Match Log. Submit a “Match Log” which lists all your matches both as a referee and as an assistant referee.  Your match log must include date, location, team names and level of match (i.e. U-10, U-12 and so on).  You must log 75 matches as a referee and 25 as an assistant referee before submitting your upgrade request.  NOTE: High school and college matches do NOT count.

Upgrade Assessment. You must be assessed as a referee in a competitive Under-19 match (this includes competitive U-18 or U-17 matches) of 90 mins. using the DSC---the three official, one whistle system---or higher match by a currently registered USSF Associate Assessor or higher.

  • Contact you ARA who will tell you which assessor to call.  Please do not contact the assessor directly until after you have spoken with your ARA.
  • Contact your assignor to arrange for the appropriate level match.  Call the assessor and tell him of the time and place.  It is your duty to co-ordinate the assessor and the match.
  • Sometimes assessments can be arranged at local tournaments

Re-certification Clinic and Written Exam. You must attend a referee re-certification clinic (preferably an advanced 07 re-certification clinic) and pass the Entry Level Referee Exam with a score of 85 or higher.

Details can be found in your USSF "Referee Administrative Handbook."

**All the criteria for upgrading must be completed within the same twelve month period.**

And remember: Safe. Fair. Fun. Soccer.
